How it all began: The story of how we adopted our cats

Beginner's Guide to Adopting a Cat Adopting our cats was a whirlwind experience, filled with excitement and also nervous laughter.
From a young age, I always dreamed of having a cat. However, circumstances often meant that any cats in my life were more like distant companions, living outside or in less-than-ideal conditions. Eventually they ran away or went missing, which broke my heart over and over again. Throughout my adulthood, life brought me to destinations where a cat would miss the required space or comfort. Only about two years ago I finally moved into my own apartment that was cosy yet spacious enough for pets. So, my mind was made up.

My boyfriend stumbled upon an ad on an online local newspaper for two adult cats looking for a new house because their then parent could not keep them anymore. There were no pictures or detailed description in the enigmatic ad but I thought "why not?". After driving for an hour to another city, we met our kitty soulmates. One of them was a relatively small blueish dark gray British short hair, 2-year old Tiny, with brown eyes and outgoing nature. The other one, 1.5-year old Snow, was sitting in her carrier, petrified. Through the net of the carrier, we could see her light-blue eyes and tabby fur. She was a rare beauty, reminiscent of a snow tiger.

Fast forward to one week later... As we were loading the many items (including two cat toilets and a giant cat tree) we bought from the previous owner into my small car, I still could not believe that it was happening. We, the fresh paw parents and the two kitties in their carriers, squeezed into the front seats. My boyfriend was holding Snow in his lap and put Tiny in front of his legs. Halfway through the distance on the German highway, guess what happened? Tiny broke out of her carrier and started roaming about my boyfriend, who was unable to move an inch because of Snow's carrier he was holding. In total shock, we had an emergency stop at the nearest opportunity and gave a fierce battle to put Tiny back in the carrier. And laugh we did. We knew for sure she was a sweet mischief-maker, destined to bring us a lot of joy.

Once we finally made it home safe and sound, Tiny immediately went on to investigating every corner of the house while Snow remained in her carrier for the first couple of hours. Few has changed in their characters since. They have become more open and talkative, for sure, but we still observe and cherish the timidness of Snow and goofiness of Tiny every day. And believe it or not, having them still feels surreal.
